Climbing the Ladder: The Golden Generation?

The ill-fated English ‘Golden Generation’

There are some incredible players in the picture above. In certain areas, England had players that would walk into any side in the world, club or international. They were supposed to end years of hurt, finally bring a trophy home to the nation that invented the sport. This was England’s Golden Generation, and for years they flattered to deceive, splitting opinion throughout the nation but on the whole disappointing and frustrating millions of loyal fans.

So if this lot were a ‘Golden’ Generation, and managed to do so little with so much talent, then what exactly does a Golden Generation entail?

YouthIntake

Here at lowly Truro City, we have our own Golden Generation! Is this going to be a group of world beaters? The South West equivalent of the Class of 92? Or will this group flatter to deceive too, just like Terry, Gerrard, Lampard and co?

TRURO CITY – 2017/18 YOUTH INTAKE

Goalkeepers: Jake Holland

As highlighted when the intake was announced, young full-back Wayne Winter is the pick of the bunch. I also like the look of Daniel Ashton, despite his clearly poor technicals, he can pass a ball well enough for this level and has a fair bit of pace to really drive forward, I don’t see him doing too much as a holding player, however.

So two fairly exciting prospects, but isn’t this supposed to be a Golden Generation? What’s the deal with the rest? A lot comes down to mentality.

PersonalityOverview

The Truro City Youth Intake, sorted by Determination.

I’ve never seen such an appalling set of player personalities in all my time playing Football Manager. Seven of the intake are unambitious (including the shining star Wayne Winter) and we also have a player with low self belief, and another with determination so low the personality tab felt the need to point it out to me! The stats don’t make for much better reading, with 9 players having a determination stat under 10, meaning they’ll never really strive to better themselves, or further their careers.

So looking forward, where do I see these guys fitting in to the future of Truro City? Honestly, nowhere. Wayne Winter will stay in the Under 18s for the end of the season, but may well be promoted next season to act as a back up to Connor Riley-Lowe. There’s a small chance we may see Daniel Ashton get a few games in the future if he kicks on well, but I see no way that the others will get into the squad. As Golden Generations go, this one may be the most disappointing of all time, maybe even more disappointing than England…

Thanks for Reading.
