It’s nearly here! I’ve never been more excited for a new installment of Football Manager than I am this year, with the training overhaul and tactical changes especially peaking my interest. I’m ready to have the best year of FM I’ve ever had.
I know save reveals aren’t the most exciting posts to read, and it’s going to be a fairly short one, but I wanted to reveal my choice of team in a separate post so that I can follow on with a couple of introductory posts that have a bit more detail before the save actually starts. I actually planned a whole series of intro posts detailing the way I’m going to tackle certain aspects of the game for this save, but those will come further down the line now.
I’ve actually had the idea for my save since about halfway through FM18’s cycle. It’s a save in a region I’ve never been to before, but I think I’ll really enjoy. I was keen this year to build on the basis of a solid club, and really mould them in my way, allowing the club to grow by developing youngsters and profiting from sales, whether this is youth intake talents or scouted players that are bought low and sold high.
One region where a lot of people have had success with this kind of policy is in Scandinavia, and it’s a region I’ve always thought about doing a save before, but as I’ve hinted at in a few posts, I’m very guilty of just staying in my comfort zone and not venturing out.
So I had the type of save I wanted to do, I had the region I wanted to manage in, now all I had to do was narrow it down and find the right club for me. The search started in Sweden, it’s the most popular of the Scandinavian countries for saves I’d say, and my main motivation for this kind of save was looking at the incredible journey that Graham Potter took Östersunds FK on before leaving for Swansea at the start of this season. I did think about continuing that journey, but it just didn’t feel right for what I want to achieve, a bit too much of the work has already been done. I actually couldn’t find a club in Sweden that really grabbed my attention, so I continued the search, into Norway and again, nothing doing. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t certain what kind of level I wanted to be at, but I knew when I found the club I’d know.

I found them.
Lyngby BK (Boldklub, hence the title) in the Danish 1st Division, which is the second tier below the Superliga. I think they’re the perfect club for what I want to do this year, there’s plenty of scope to improve the club both on and off the pitch, but I’m not starting from absolute rock bottom.
A full introduction to the club will follow, but for now, I’ll address the aims of the save. I don’t set out specific rules or a massive amount of different short and long-term goals, but I do have certain things that I want to implement and achieve.
The main one is to set up a solid youth development program, setting a clear course from youth squad into the first team, and continuing to improve players to supplement the squad but also to sell on for large profits, something I see as being vital to the future growth of the club.
I also want to focus on improving the club as a whole, rather than just the playing squad. Developments to the youth facilities, junior recruitment, and youth coaching will help to accelerate the main goal above, while improvements to things such as the stadium and the scouting range will come over time as the club grows.
Other aims will obviously relate to performance on the pitch, there’s no point in developing young players and improving the infrastructure of the club if we’re happy to sit languishing in the Danish 2nd tier. The short-term goal will, of course, be promotion and stabilizing in the top flight, and once that is achieved then the assault on the upper reaches of the game will begin. I’d like to see Danish football improve as a whole while I do, earning more European spots and improving the reputation of the league against other nations, but it’s not something I’m going to be actively working towards. I’ll be the Lyngby manager, not a member of the Danish FA after all.
So I think that’s it for now, just a small save reveal, a couple more introductory posts will follow soon, giving a bit more information on Lyngby BK and their new manager!
Bring on FM19!
